Public Military History Award

This $1500 award is restricted to KU History Department graduate students, and offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in public history. The recipient will work with Tim Gaddie, Traditions Administrator for the KU History program at the Memorial Union, to design and create a project focused on the University of Kansas and some aspect of military history, broadly defined. During summer 2022, with support from Gaddie, along with Beth Bailey and/or David Farber, they will conduct local history research and develop content for the project. Although the recipient’s key responsibility is content development, they will be expected to play a part in all the steps of the project, including concept, design, and promotion.

This competition is open to all history graduate students, not only to those with a concentration in military history. Last year's recipient was Clark Terrill; you can find more about his project here.

To apply: Submit a proposal that identifies and briefly outlines or discusses the focus of a relevant public history project (e.g., KU students and the Vietnam War; the GI Bill and KU; a history of ROTC at KU; the Global War on Terror and KU military volunteers, etc.).  Please specify the kind of public/digital history project envisioned (static exhibit, digital space, public talk, virtual tour, etc.). The proposal should be no more than 350 words.

Proposals are due March 15 and should be sent by email attachment to Professor David Farber (dfarber@ku.edu) and Tim Gaddie (tgaddie@ku.edu). Contact Professor Farber if you have any questions. We anticipate announcing the award’s recipient in late April, at the launch of the 2021-22 exhibit.
